Labor Day schedules for CALM and Kern County Museum
The California Living Museum (CALM), 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway (between Lake Ming and Hart Park) will be open, but the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Avenue in Bakersfield, will be closed for the Sept. 6 Labor Day holiday.

Giant Sequoia National Monument Plan available for 90-day comment period
PORTERVILLE, CA –The Giant Sequoia National Monument Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS), and Giant Sequoia National Monument Draft Management Plan (Draft Management Plan), are available for public comment. The Draft EIS describes six alternatives: (A through F), one would manage the Giant Sequoia National Monument. "We encourage the public to provide their input," said Regional Forester Randy Moore. "The Giant Sequoia National Monument has 33 of California's 75 Giant Sequoia Groves."

Interpretive Planning on the Sequoia
The public plays a vital role in helping to shape the future of the Sequoia’s interpretive operations by identifying an interest and passion for unique and special places. In 2008, the Sequoia completed a comprehensive Interpretive Plan which defines the forest program for the next few years. It includes goals, objectives, themes, topics, and important storylines for 12 recreation settings, provides an action plan, media recommendations, design guidelines for interpretive efforts, and tools to help forest interpreters.

Martin’s June Jam raises funds for KVHS Music Department
Kern Valley High School music teacher Jay Jarrett was in for a suprise Friday morning as planners from “Ted Martin’s 5th Annual June Jam” dropped by to make a $1246.14 donation. The “June Jam” was started by local musician Ted Martin, and upon Martin’s death in late-2009, was used as an opportunity to raise money for local music programs. “I had no idea,” said Jarrett, “it’s completely blown me away. Driver's education course to begin Sept. 8
Driver’s Education is the topic of a Community Education class being offered by Cerro Coso Community College this fall. The course will meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Kern Valley High School beginning Sept. 8 and ending Oct. 6.
Tips for a successful start to new school year
First, just know that no matter how well-prepared you and your child are, the first weeks of school will most likely put you all in a tailspin. New experiences, people, and classes are exciting and yet, cause stress, too. Being well prepared for the transition can certainly cut down on some of the stress.
Parents and students invited to attend Kern County College Night on Sept. 13
Having a college degree can make a difference of approximately $875,000 in a person’s lifetime earnings, according to the Employment Policy Foundation. That, among many reasons, is why high school students and parents are invited to attend the free, 11th annual Kern County College Night on Sept. 13 at the Rabobank Convention Center, 1001 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield. Sponsorsed by Chevron, the event runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is presented by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. It will provide information for high school and community college transfer students and anyone interested in pursuing a college education.Health
KVHD Foundation installs new officers
The Kern Valley Hospital Foundation held its installation of officers and appreciation dinner in the hospital cafeteria on July 26. The dinner recognized board members, directors-at-large and the foundation's many volunteers for all of their hard work and dedication to the district.
Seniors Summer Health Faire Sept. 13
The Kern Valley Healthcare District, partnered with the KUSD Family Resource Center, will host the 10th annual Seniors Summer Health and Information Faire on Monday, Sept.13 at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella.
