Our Opinion: Does it measure up

Published on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 2:09 PM PDT

In November our community will cast their votes for board members for both the local school and hospital districts. Voters will also determine the fate of the hospital bond issue that is seeking an increase in local property tax dollars to fund a new emergency room, amongst other things.

Bond measures are often wordy and complicated so the Kern Valley Sun wants to help make the bond measure understandable to the readers. Next week we will print the bond Measure in its entirety and we are seeking questions from the community. Those questions will be presented to the Kern Valley Healthcare District CEO Tim McGlew. Mr. McGlew has assured us that either he or CFO Chet Beedle will respond to those questions immediately and their answers will be published in the Kern Valley Sun the following week.

We will also be comparing and printing segments from the current bond to Measure M, that failed passing by a very narrow margin in 2006.

We urge our residents to submit questions in order that we may all better understand the measure, what it means to our community, what it will cost our local tax payers and what it means in terms of cost should it fail.

" In the case of "old abuse cases" it was not the ombudsman program who was the "deep throat" to the State; it was a nurse who worked in the Skilled Nursing Center, plus 2 Board Members! "

" There was no "federal oversight" in the ancient abuse cases....it was the state. The last incident could have and does happen in every hospital in the country. For someone who thinks they know the healthcare industry, you cerainly are reacting improperly. And, you can thank the state Ombudsman Program for identifying the problem. There are checks and balances everywhere! "

" To home girl: you say you have been in medical care of some sort up here for 20 years, have you ever worked at Kern Valley Healthcare District or the Hospital? "

" thanks for the compliment regarding my age. I am in my 50's and have been in and around the medical environment up here in this valley for over 20 years. As for elder abuse, we are now dealing with another issue. Granted, this issue has been dealt with quickly and efficiently, but without federal oversight, the first one would not have been corrected. This case will smear all the good work done up here forever. So goes the quote..(paraphrasing here..)For evil to flourish, all it takes is for good people to do.. nothing. "

" Those problems with the residents of SNF occurred over three years ago. What do you know about the attitude of the hospital? If you shop in a store that has a thief as an employee, so you stop shopping there because of one person? Or do you assume that the management has corrected their problem? You are young, obviously by your blog name, so take this opportunity to learn a little about life instead of condeming due to a bad choice. "

" hard to work up emotion when we have serious issues over elder abuse that seems endemic to this hospital. Why pay for a bond when the hospital is embroiled in a huge patient abuse issue that involves patient deaths? Do we want to pay for a pretty new hospital but we don't change the old attitude? "

" The hospieal is NOT broke! People like you who perpetrate inaccurate information are a menace. And to rattled, Chet is a well informed and highly qualified CFO. And, FYI, the 8 million bond wasn't misappropriated...where is your evidence? Get informed before you spew next time. "

" You may know YOUR business but you certainly don't understand the business at the hospital! The ER is for US not for doctors and nurses...and yes, we need it! Claiming bnakruptcy is not the answer. Then Cal Mortgage would own the hospital and they can sell it to a large corporation and then what? ALL of our services will cost more! Or they can sell off the assets and close it...do you want 300 people out of work? Then they won't have money to shop in your store! Get infored...get real! "

A new ER for part time doctors doesnt make since does it.

Dont you think some OVER PAID STAFF has created this problem the hospital is in. "

" I have met Chet Beedle and seen him speak in public, he certainly had a difficult time maintaining eye contact with the public when discussing this bond issue. To me, that is a sign someone is not being honest with us. I may be wrong, but I understand he was part of the fiasco when they misappropriated the 8 million bond some years ago. Do we now trust them with 22 million? It's my understanding part of the 22 million is to repay the 8 million they screwed up from before. "

" Cathy, Well said... We all need to pay attention. I am excited that my sleepy home town where I still have family and connections is getting tuned in. It doesn't matter anymore what party you belong to. Vote for the best candidate, talk to them, listen to them at the meetings... I echo in unison - VOTE ACCORDINGLY! "

Truth of course wrote on Sep 2, 2010 2:27 PM:

" I hope people will vote for the best candidates and not just vote for the popular ones; ones who are out and about in the community acting important and learned. Attend Board meetings and listen to the incumbents; do you want them managing 22 million dollars when they voted for a raise for the CEO at a time when the hospital is broke? Do you want Trustees elected who go to seminars around the state for their own entertainment, when the hospital is broke? The bond measure is important--vote accordingly! Good article Cathy! "
