The Kernville United Methodist Church held the first in a series of lectures on “Archeology and the Old Testament” Aug. 4, given by Dr. Gregg Wilkerson.

This first lecture, titled “Sex and the Cities – the Historocity of Sodom & Gommorah,” focused on whether the two cities in the famous bible tale actually existed.

“We wanted to offer something more intellectual than what we might talk about in church,” explained Reverend Lauren Chaffee.

Wilkerson, who teaches an extension course on this topic at California Stae University, Bakersfield gave a PowerPoint presentation depicting two cities that have been excavated near the Dead Sea. Helieves that Bab edh-Dhra is the historic site of Sodom, and Numeria, a mere five miles away, Gommorah.

The two cities, Wilkerson explained, are located on fault lines which made earthquakes likely in biblical times. Although the area is now a barren desert, Wilkerson explained that 4,000 years ago, it was a lush area of rolling Oakland hills, much like Paso Robles is today. However, no evidence has been uncovered that indicates the cities were seeped in debauchery, as the Bible claims. Nor is there evidence that Lot existed.

Within the city that Wilkerson believes is the Sodom mentioned in the Bible, there were burial chambers called Charnel houses, where the dead were piled in one-room tombs along with various belongings.

Wilkerson’s main argument for the city being Sodom, beside its location, was the fact that the charnel houses showed evidence of burning on the roof. This, said Wilkerson, is evidence that the city was destroyed in as it described in the Bible.

In the archaeological dig that unearthed Numeria, which Wilkerson believes to have been Gomorrah, it was discovered that that city had also been destroyed by fire. There was a heavy layer of ash when the city was destroyed.

The most popular theory among scientists is that a large earthquake caused a font of oil to be released, and was somehow ignited, creating an oil fire that razed the city. Wilkerson disagrees, saying, “Oil just doesn’t behave that way.”

Wilkerson contends there are two possible theories about how the cities were destroyed. The first – a lightning storm, the other – there was a meteor shower, which would jibe with “eyewitness accounts of fire raining down on the cities from heaven.”

To prove his theory, Wilkerson would like to find a professor to assist him in a dig that would search for mini-meteorites. He has written grants to obtain funding for the search; however, he conceded that securing funds at this time is a difficult proposition.

The next in the three-lecture series will be held this evening, Aug. 11, at 6:00 p.m. at the Kernville United Methodist Church on the corner of Big Blue and Siretta.

This lecture will be on the topic of “King David and the Golden Age,” and will consider whether King David and King Solomon actually existed. For more information, call the church at (760) 376-2751, or Dr. Gregg Wilkerson at (661) 391-6081.

" I believe in God, have accepted Christ as my savior. I do not believe that my belief in Christ gives me the right or obligation to choose what is right and wrong for other people. God gave people free-will so who am I to try and take that away from them. Using God's word as a justification is a good way to turn people away from faith. Finally, Faith is just that ... it having faith. It is simply believing without proof and trusting that God is watching over us. "

" Yes, the Sodom and Gamorrah story is used against same sex marriage. I get that. But, same sex marriage and Prop 8 were not mentioned anywhere in the article. Not everything revolves around your immoral lifestyle. This is probably about archeology and the Bible. Period! "

" Oh tabatha, do you know that the "sodom and gamorrah" story is used as an arguement agaist same sex marriage? That's why. Nice try though.

Really, I do find this interesting and am not bashing Christianity.I actually respect our friends at the Methodist church. I'm just suggesting that stories in the bible are just that; stories. Fact, there was a fire. The rest is a story. It's not that hard. "

" Celia, not everything is about same sex marriage! I did not see one word about same sex marriage in the article. But you have to go and make everything about that one topic. I feel sorry for you. You obviously do not have a life outside of bashing Christians for not accepting your immoral lifestyle. "

" Fact? How do you know that the Bible is factual when it was written well after the death of Jesus and written by men and written and rewritten many times over. How would you like to prove that your Bible is factual and all others are not? Google lies in the bible and you'll find hundreds of items that prove that the Bible is not completely factual. That and the fact that all Christians interpret it differently is further proof. A fact is testable....the Bible is not. "

" as a former christian college student, I find this interesting yet still falls short of proof. What this indicates is that there was a big ol' fire. It does not prove that the biblical story about the fire is correct. It does not give lisence for professing christians to use the story of Sodom and Gommarah as a weapon against fairness and marriage equality. "

" Wow, I thought the purpose of this article was so the professor could catch some attention and maybe receive some funds for his research. I was unaware it would open up a jr. high status argument on who is right and who is wrong. you beleive what you want and I will do the same, but in the end every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. Good luck to the professor and anyone who would devote their life to something more worth while than endless back and forth babble. "

" Truth, there you are again. Condeming things that you have no knowledge about. Obviously you don't have the first clue what a Pagan actually is. So, while you're busy spewing your bible rhetoric, we'll be outside honoring and protecting Earth for your great-great grandchildren! Get an education, ma'm, and maybe you won't be quite so angry. "

" Notice that "hoodo-voodo" is the first one to try to deny the Bible....I have given up trying to help the heathens and pagans....I say let them rot as they want to!
AS it says in scripture, shake the dust off your feet and move on to other people and citys who are believers, you have done the duty of informing them, if they do not listen that is their fault, you have done as you have been commanded to do....forgeddaboutthem! "

" One reason we know the Bible is not fiction is because humans always tend to make themselves look good. the Bible does not do this. Give it some time. All things biblical will be proven fact. This is about faith folks. The same kind it takes to know the sun will come up every morning. Faith "

" hoodoo confuses the account of Lot trying to protect the angelic visitors in Genesis 19 with the later story of a traveler and his concubine in Judges 19. It is however, an example of how critical some can be without attempting to actually know the Bible. "

" It's great to see there is a fact based exploration of biblical stories.

It is sad how many people believe the bible is gods word. Some truth, some myth and a desire to control people by fear, prejudice and propaganda are the main tenets of Judaic/Cristian writings.

How many people of faith understand the story of creation was largely lifted from earlier Sumerian writings?

The story of Lot being righteous and giving his daughter over to rapists is a very odd thing. He steps over her body on his way out. "
