The Kern Valley Healthcare District is once again dealing with an allegation of abuse, this time regarding the alleged mistreatment of an elderly emergency room patient by a registered nurse.

The Aug. 23 incident may bring to mind memories of reported past abuse of residents in the district’s Skilled Nursing Facility. Yet for all intents and purposes, that is where the similarities end.

Hospital staff and administration reacted swiftly and decisively to last week’s incident involving registered nurse Rene Gachon Gotico, 65, and an 79-year-old female patient. Gotico is alleged to have denied the woman’s request for help to use the restroom which is located outside of the emergency room. When she tried to stand, Gotico allegedly grabbed the woman around the neck with one hand and pushed her back onto the bed. Action was immediately taken on all levels; from the nursing supervisor who witnessed the event, by Dr. Manuel Sacapano the ER doctor on duty and Director of Nursing Mark Gordon.

Giving a timeline of the events that occurred on the evening of the alleged incident, McGlew stated, “The house supervisor, who was standing there when it happened, immediately told the emergency room physician who happened to be our medical director that night.” McGlew added, “He told her to get the Sheriff and then he immediately tended to the patient.” Gordon was called at home and according to McGlew, “He (Gordon) informed the house supervisor to take all of his (Gotico) patient care responsibilities away.” When Gordon arrived at the hosital minutes later he suspended Gotico pending further investigation. A sheriff arrived shortly after that and Gotico was taken into custody. According to Kern County Sheriff’s spokesperson Ray Pruitt, Gotico was booked on Aug. 24 on a single felony charge of elder abuse.

McGlew stated that he and other staff were shocked to hear of the allegation as Gotico has been employed by the district off and on for years as a traveling nurse. He added, “There was no indication that this was coming. No one saw it coming.”

Lucille Barr of Bodfish, a patient in the Kern Valley Hospital ER several weeks ago, was also cared for by Gotico but had a very different experience. “I was surprised to hear about this,” Barr commented, “He was very pleasant with me. He was respectful.”

Commenting on the impact the incident has had on the district McGlew stated, “The staff are all very concerned.” He added, “I told them, ‘How we respond to this is how people are going to judge us.’ We’re here to protect the patients. That’s our responsibility. Do it.”

McGlew stated that the patient’s nephew appeared to be satisfied with manner in which the matter was handled. As of press time, the relative was unavailable for comment.

" For you uninformed who think you don't need a hospital....next time you cut your foot or finger, go to Bakersfield for your stitches! Don't you realize that the hospital employs over 300 of your neighbors!? You want them to lose their jobs? Seriously, do you use your brain at all? "

" My husband and I have lived in this valley for over 35 years. We had a working ranch and grew hay. We grew older and discided to stay here in this valley so we bought 3 lots an buildt our home about one mile up from the hospital. We want this hospital to stay so that when and if we need it, it will be there for us and the rest of the valley residents. For the persons that want to travel to Bakersfield or Ridgecrest let them. When the time comes that they can no longer drive
    whatthen? "

" "Close the Hospital" do you even thing before you say things? Obviously NOT! Your ignorant and need to get a clue! Our hospital does the best they can with what they get. The staff is incredible, they put their heart into it and i know from experience that it is not an easy job. This Town would not last a day if they closed the hospital. WE NEED THIS HOSPITAL! So get informed and know your facts before you state such an ignorant opinion! "

" I'm thinking a lot of the people who want to close the hospital are probably relatively healthy and/or haven't needed emergency care. They probably have reliable cars and can easily get from point a to b. I doubt they are thinking about the very sick or the elderly living in poverty who don't have as many options as they do. In other words, thinking only about themselves and their precious pocketbooks. Typical. "

" WE DONT NEED TO CLOSE THE HOSPITAL WE JUST NEED TO GET NURSES AND DOCTORS IN ALL FIELDS WHO CARE IN OUR HOSPITAL THERE ARE SO MANY ELDERLY PEOPLE AND YOUNG PEOPLE WHO CAN NOT NOR SHOULD THEY HAVE TO TRAVEL TO BAKERSFIELD TO GET MEDICAL CARE THATS CRAZY WE JUST NEED A GOOD WORKING HOSPITAL WILL FULL STAFF. " Are you people insane? "Close the hospital"? Finding a decent job is already hard enough up here, and you want to get rid of the hospital. How many people would lose their jobs? Having to go to Bakersfield EVERY time you needed to see a doctor would be ridiculous, especially for the many elderly people here who see them on a regular basis. "

" You folks who think that closing our hospital is a good idea are quite shallow. We need it and I'll support it 100%. Why would you prefer to drive 60 plus miles for care when you can be in your own backyard. This type of incident happens sometimes in every care facility. Our hospital takes good care of many people without referral to BK and if you spent any time at all with facts, you would know this. I'll bet you naysayers do all your shopping out of the valley, too. Too sad "

" i cant stand kv hospital. they have been sub standard since inception in my opinion. they are not equipped to handle major emergencies (their words)as ive learned just recently. why fund a hospital that doesnt go the distance when providing care. visitors and residents of kern valley can sustain major injuries. you need a hospital that can take care of them instead of sending most people to bakersfield. "

" RIGHT ON! Close the Hospital. What we need is a well funded EMT/Paramedic service and a trauma center. It is nuts to continue to support a full service hospital here in the valley. If you seriously want to consider a great alternative to our present expensive system, check out Cambria's Healthcare CSD.
I know though, that the vested interests and those who make their living off our local Hospital will howl with indignation and try and frighten old folks into keeping the albatross of KVHD "
