Residents and guests at Rivernook Campground north of Kernville had a rude awakening Sunday night when a fire broke out around 9:00 p.m.

CARE Ambulance, Kern County Sheriffs, and Kern County Fire units from Stations 76 in Kernville, 72 in Lake Isabella, and 71 in Southlake responded to the “structure response” dispatch.

Residents and guests at Rivernook Campground north of Kernville helped first responders sort out the details of Sunday night’s fire. No injuries were reported.

Initial reports included accounts of pepper spray and/or a cigarette lighter thrown into a fire. When the dust finally settled, fire personnel determined that plastics – a table and a cooler – were the source of the fire.

Potentially dangerous, toxic fumes were emitted; however, Rivernook residents were unharmed and declined medical aid.
